WINNIPEG, TREATY 1 – Frontline health care support workers in Extendicare personal care homes will be picketing outside Tuxedo Villa Personal Care Home today, April 9, calling out the private operator’s broken payroll system that has resulted in dozens of grievances.
“Care workers shouldn’t have to be worried every two weeks if they are being paid correctly,” said Gina McKay, President of CUPE Manitoba. “We are calling on Extendicare to fix the broken WorkDay payroll system immediately”.
The WorkDay payroll system was introduced to Extendicare operated care homes in Manitoba in the spring of 2023. Since then, the WorkDay system has resulted in pay errors, incorrect calculations for entitlements such as sick days, shift premiums, and leaves, as well as inaccurate seniority lists. Extendicare is a private, for-profit operator that pays out millions to shareholders.
CUPE has filed over 40 grievances related to WorkDay against Manitoba Extendicare homes. Some grievances impact over 100 workers who did not receive owed retro payments. Similar challenges face Extendicare sites across Ontario where pickets have also been held.
“Extendicare knows about the problems with WorkDay, but they have only been able to address this systemic issue on a case-by-case basis,” said May Quinto, President of
CUPE 280 representing support staff at Tuxedo Villa.
“We put our hearts and hard hours into our work, and we shouldn’t have to fight for what we are owed”.
