CUPE Manitoba delivers $50,000 in aid for wildfire relief

Manitoba’s wildfires have impacted the lives of thousands across the province. The CUPE National Executive Board approved $50,000 to help relief efforts for Manitoba families affected by the forest fires and subsequent relocations.

While the province of Manitoba has lifted the provincial state of emergency, many Manitobans continue to rely on support from emergency relief organizations.

On Monday, June 23 CUPE Manitoba delivered the donation to Michelle Phaneuf, Senior Manager Operations, Planning & Business Support (Manitoba & Nunavut) of the Canadian Red Cross Manitoba Wildfires Appeal.

“The devastating wildfires in Manitoba have left thousands of families in unimaginable circumstances,” says Gina McKay, President of CUPE Manitoba.

“Our union is pitching in not just to support our members who are impacted, but their communities as well”.

CUPE’s donation in Manitoba includes $35,000 to the Canadian Red Cross Manitoba Wildfires Appeal, as well as $5,000 each to the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, Southern Chiefs Organization, and Manitoba Métis Federation.

Joining McKay is CUPE Manitoba General Vice-President Carmen Prefontaine.

“This provincial emergency disproportionately impacts remote First Nations communities, many of which remain at risk,” notes Prefontaine.

“CUPE’s support to First Nations and Métis communities ensures we continue to live up to our commitment towards reconciliation with Indigenous communities, whether in the workplace, in times of disaster, or in times of rebuilding”.

Gina McKay who also serves as CUPE National General Vice-President for the Prairies notes a similar donation is being made by CUPE National to support relief efforts in Saskatchewan.

On Friday, June 20th CUPE Manitoba presented the donation to MMF Vice-President–Winnipeg Region Andrew (André) Carrier, and Stephanie Meilleur MMF Lead – Emergency Response.
