CUPE 5567 Members to Picket Friday, Calling on Employer to “Fix Marymound”
WINNIPEG, TREATY 1 – CUPE members at Marymound Inc. in Winnipeg invite media and community members to join an information picket at Main Street and Leila Avenue, calling on Marymound to implement immediate improvements to support front-line workers and the youth they serve.
When: Friday, March 20, 2026, at 2:00 p.m.
Where: Corner of Main Street and Leila Avenue
Winnipeg, Manitoba
Employees at Marymound unionized with CUPE in 2024 over numerous issues in the workplace. These workers are currently in negotiations for a first contract with the aim of improving working conditions for staff following years of serious concerns in the workplace.
These concerns, which have also been profiled in media, are rooted in Marymound’s inability to provide staff the tools and supports they need to work effectively with at-risk youth. Negotiating an official contract is a first step in ensuring accountability and stability for staff after years of strain and unaddressed concerns
“Working with at-risk youth can be a demanding job, but what makes it harder is when management refuses to provide the supports and stability for staff to do their jobs effectively,” said Gina McKay, President of CUPE Manitoba. “These workers are in these roles because they are committed and care deeply for the youth they serve, but the workplace has glaring issues that need to be fixed.”
Many workers are barely making above minimum wage, and face violence and safety risks on a daily basis.
CUPE is calling on the Board of Directors to settle a fair first agreement with staff as a first step in ensuring the work environment is healthy, and staff are paid for the value of their work.
“Good working conditions for staff translates directly to improved services for the families who depend on Marymound,” concludes McKay.
Marymound Inc. is an organization that provides care to support children and youth including frontline staff, youth care practitioners, adolescent treatment counsellors, paramedics, and school staff.
