Ban on Calling out Racism

WINNIPEG, TREATY 1 –

Manitoba’s largest labour union says a recent decision by the Manitoba Legislative Assembly Speaker banning words that call out harmful behaviour is wrongheaded and harmful.“The problem with racism isn’t the word ‘racism’,” said Gina McKay, President of CUPE Manitoba. “The problem is racist comments and actions.”

CUPE members were shocked last week when Progressive Conservative MLAs used harmful and racist stereotypes to degrade the Premier’s character.

CUPE Manitoba Welcomes Supreme Court Decision to Grant Labour Coalition Intervenor Status in Bill 137 Appeal

WINNIPEG, TREATY 1 – This week, CUPE Saskatchewan, the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour, and the Canadian Teachers’ Federation were granted leave by the Supreme Court of Canada to intervene in the Court of Appeal case concerning Bill 137: The Education Amendment Act, 2023.

In addition to concerns about the pre-emptive invocation of the notwithstanding clause to protect the Bill from being struck down by the courts, CUPE remains concerned that the legislation harms youth and sets a model for overriding workers’ Charter rights in the future.

WINNIPEG, TREATY 1 – Manitoba’s largest labour Union says Manitoba Hydro needs to take advantage of the Manitoba NDP’s newest regulatory changes that allow for Manitoba Hydro to hire Institutional Safety Officers (ISOs).

BRANDON, TREATY 2 – CUPE Manitoba invites media and the community to participate in the Brandon area launch of CUPE Manitoba’s “We Work for Manitoba!” children’s activity book on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at the CUPE Brandon Area Office located at 1911 Park Avenue.CUPE members will also be handing out the new activity book during this year’s Santa Claus Parade as part of CUPE Manitoba’s Dasher sponsorship and Holiday Bus parade entry.
