Unions, Community Organizations Call on Government not to Abandon Promise to Protect Tenants, Immediately Implement New Rent Hike Rules

At a joint press conference earlier today, President Gina McKay shared that CUPE Manitoba is proud to join together with the West Broadway Tenants Committee, the Manitoba Association of Newcomer Serving Agencies, the Right to Housing Coalition, and Pride Winnipeg, in support of legislation that directly affects Manitoba workers and communities.
President McKay was joined by CUPE Manitoba Executive Board member, Jackson Unger, who is active with the West Broadway Tenants Committee as a community activist. President McKay shared that “housing is a human right as recognized under international law, and as the Right to Housing Coalition highlights, that all people have the right to housing, and all levels of government have a responsibility to ensure this right through strong policy and action.”
President McKay further shared that it is in the best interest of all Manitobans – including those who are one pay check away from eviction, and one eviction away from homelessness – to protect our most basic human need to be sheltered.
As a union, we strive to make our members lives better in two ways – at the bargaining table by advocating and fighting for higher wages; and through political action to make life more affordable in the province.
We call for these amendments to be passed without any further delay. To read CUPE Manitoba’s letter to Premier Kinew and Minister Sandhu sent in August, and today’s joint Community Press Release, see below.
