CUPE Manitoba Check In: Is Your Workplace Compliant?

CUPE Manitoba Reminds Locals to Ensure Workplace are Complying with Free Menstrual Products in Workplaces

WINNIPEG, TREATY 1 – Manitoba’s largest union sent a letter to local presidents advising of changes to Manitoba’s Employment Standards Code requiring employers to provide free menstrual products to employees and offering assistance in enforcing this law.

“This is an important initiative that prioritizes menstrual health,” said Gina McKay, President of CUPE Manitoba. “We want to make sure workers have the tools to ensure employers are complying with these new requirements.”

CUPE locals are engaging in an information campaign with employers and workers that will include notifications during bargaining meetings so members are aware of these requirements and are prepared to enforce the legislation.

“We think most employers are going to meet this requirement voluntarily,” said McKay, “but CUPE is a big union and we will defend our members rights to have these products in their workplace as needed.”

The Canadian Union of Public Employees is Canada’s largest union representing more than 800,000 members. In Manitoba, CUPE represents approximately 40,000 members working in health care facilities, personal care homes, home care, school divisions, municipal services, social services, disability support services, child care centres, public utilities, libraries, and family emergency services.
