For April 22, Earth Day, President McKay spoke with CUPE Local 500 member, Cameron Patrick, who is Manitoba’s representative on CUPE National’s Environment Committee.

Brother Cameron shared that “CUPE has made a commitment to fight for the environment, for the good of the planet, individuals, and communities. There are many things we can do as individuals and union members to help out in this fight, including recycling and composting in the workplace.

The Second Call for the 2025 CUPE Manitoba Convention has been released and includes new updates, including:

An overview of the Agenda and Convention Speakers, an invitation to bring your banner to Convention, an official call for Silent Auction prizes and donations, an update to positions up for Election, a Collection Drive initiative in partnership with United Way Labour for Menstrual products, and many other Diversity and Committee opportunities at Convention, to name just a few!

Indigenous Solidarity

CUPE Manitoba’s Indigenous Council is hosting a second Beading Night on Wednesday, March 26th, 2025. This event will build participation and connection for Indigenous, Métis, and Inuit members as an Indigenous Council event. Those participating are also encouraged to join the Indigenous Council!

WINNIPEG, TREATY 1 – The union representing 19,000 health care support workers in the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and Shared Health applauds the NDP government’s efforts to address the staffing crises, calling it a “huge relief” for front-line workers.

Attendees at the CUPE Prairie Human Rights Conference drag performance raised almost $500 for the Saskatoon Indian and Métis Friendship Centre (SIMFC) warm-up shelter.

On January 21, conference participants had the option of attending a drag performance featuring performers from across the prairies. The optional social evening was part of CUPE’s commitment to offer dry and sober events while highlighting local artists.

It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Nello Altomare, Manitoba Minister of Education & Early Childhood Learning, and MLA for Transcona.

Minister Altomare was a beloved educator and friend to so many Manitoba students, parents, child care workers, and school support staff.

Human Rights

September 30th is the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation. CUPE Manitoba is committed to support reconciliation and justice for all Indigenous Peoples. This important day is also known as Orange Shirt Day, and with thanks to the Manitoba NDP, is now legislated as a Provincial Statutory day in Manitoba.
Orange Shirt Day provides Manitobans with an opportunity to honour the memories of the Indigenous children whose lives were lost in the residential school system, and recognize the strength of the survivors and their families.
