December 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women where we take the time to remember and honour the victims of the 1989 shooting at École Polytechnique de Montréal, where 14 women were targeted and killed by a lone gunman because of their gender. One of those women was Maryse Laganière, a CUPE member who worked at the school.
On November 20, workplaces and communities will take the time to observe Transgender Day of Remembrance and commemorate persons who have lost their lives because of anti-trans violence.
Started in 1998 to honour the murder of a young transgender woman in Massachusetts, this day is now marked by ceremonies in cities across Canada and around the world.

Health care support workers held coordinated noon-hour information pickets on July 18 at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg and Middlechurch Home in West St. Paul Manitoba, to protest against the provincial governments cuts and changes to health care.
Brandon, MB – CUPE Local 737, representing school support workers at Brandon School Division will be hosting a public town hall meeting to raise red flags over the provincial government’s plan to build a new school in Brandon using a Public Private Partnership (P3) model.
“When the Premier announced the new school, he said that P3 schools were successful across the country” said Jamie Rose, President of CUPE 737.
Concordia Hospital health care support staff to hold rally today
Winnipeg – health care support staff at Concordia Hospital are holding a rally on Tuesday, April 11 at 11:30am in front of the Concordia Hospital grounds.

WINNIPEG – Kildonan Personal Care Centre workers – the women and men who look after elders with compassion and care every day – will be holding an information picket on Thursday, March 23, 2017.
Contract talks between Local 4860 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees and Revera, the company that runs Kildonan PCC, broke down in late January over remaining bargaining items.
Today, the Pallister government unveiled plans to make sweeping changes that affect CUPE members.
WAGES FREEZES AND CAPS
The Canadian Union of Public Employees Manitoba is disappointed to see the government introduce heavy-handed legislation that would bypass the bargaining table and impose four years of wage freezes and caps on public sector workers.
Former Winnipeg City Councillor Harvey Smith passed away at Victoria Hospital on Sunday, March 12, 2017, after a short illness. Smith had been living in care since falling in his home last summer. He was 80 years of age.
Smith served on City Council representing Sargent Park Ward between 1980 and 1986, and representing the Daniel McIntyre Ward from 1998 until 2014.
