Chāpān Games and Teachings, September 28th, 2025

CUPE Manitoba is proud to be a sponsor of the upcoming Chāpān Games & Teachings event taking place on September 28th, in celebration of September 30th – the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation.

On behalf of the Indigenous Council and CUPE Manitoba, we are inviting CUPE Locals to join the event, if you are able, in Winnipeg – Treaty 1.

The event details:

Date:               Sunday, September 28, 2025
Time:               11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Location:         CN Stage & Skate Park, The Forks

This important community gathering focuses on healing through ceremony, laughter, and fun with Chāpāns (Grandparents/Great-Grandparents) and young people, highlighting their teachings and traditional Indigenous games. It is also a time of remembrance for the children who did not return home due to harmful government policies, and they will be honoured through an installation of children’s shoes representing the impact of these great losses.

Attendees are asked to bring a pair (or more) of brand-new children’s shoes (kindergarten-grade 8) to be added to the installation that will be on display  and then donated to an elementary school.

This important day will feature:

  • Grand Entry at 11:00 a.m.,
  • Stand-up comedy, storytelling, and Sharing Circles,
  • Chāpān teachings and traditional games,
  • Live music and performances,
  • Free food provided by The Salvation Army, including food trucks, and
  • Sacred Fire and Sacred Water ceremonies.

If you have events happening in your community for National TRC Day in Manitoba, please be sure to share the information with the CUPE Manitoba office by emailing Deanna West, at: officeadmin@cupe.mb.ca. We would love to hear from you and add events to the notices out to affiliated Locals.

We hope that you can join us, and for those who are unable, feel free to check out events in your community, and visit the Southern Chiefs’ Organization listing with numerous events throughout Manitoba: https://scoinc.mb.ca/orange-shirt-day-events-2024/
