Stefanson setting new Manitoba schools up for failure: CUPE Manitoba

WINNIPEG, TREATY 1 – Today Minister of Education, Wayne Ewasko, and Minister of Consumer Protection and Government Services, James Teitsma, announced that they will be building new schools under the Public-Private Partnership (P3) model.

“This government tried P3 schools before but cancelled them because they realised building schools the traditional way would cost less and get done faster,” said
Gina McKay, President of CUPE Manitoba.

Indigenous water protectors, CUPE leaders Gina McKay, Gord Delbridge, and elected CUPE MB Indigenous Representative Brandon Murdock, Elder Gramma Shingoose, the Southern Thunderbird Medicine Drum group, and speakers including NDP MLA for Winnipeg-St Johns Nahanni Fontaine and activist Sadie Lavoie gathered at the Oodena Celebration Circle at the Forks to mark World Water Day on Wednesday.

CUPE Manitoba marks the U.N. International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

In 1966 the United Nations proclaimed March 21 the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination to honour and remember the victims of the Sharpeville South Africa massacre.

On March 21, 1960, sixty nine peaceful protesters were killed by law enforcement and at least 180 were injured physically. They were peacefully protesting the use of pass laws in South Africa which were very similar to the pass system Canada used to control Indigenous peoples.

CUPE 1063 strike update

Announcement (from CUPE 1063 bargaining update #25)
On Thursday March 16, 2023, CUPE 1063 and the Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba agreed on a tentative new collective agreement pending ratification. Strike action will be suspended.

The agreement will have to be approved by both the CUPE 1063 Executive Committee and the Board of Directors of the WCB.

Workers Compensation Board staff issue strike deadline

Staff at the Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba (WCB) have provided the WCB with five working days’ notice that unless the WCB offers a fair deal, they will officially be on strike.

“Staff at the WCB have been without a new contract for over two years,” said Bob Sawchyn, President of CUPE Local 1063 representing approximately 450 staff at the WCB.

WINNIPEG, TREATY 1 – Manitoba’s largest union is not convinced that Premier Heather Stefanson’s provincial budget is anything more than an attempt to bury the harm the conservatives have caused to public services in Manitoba.

As Black History Month 2023 comes to an end, I Karen Brown – CUPE Manitoba’s elected Representative for Racialized Workers – want to thank all the volunteers and organizations that work to make this short month a time of great celebration   and learning, filled with music, great food and company. With the Youth Symposium and Debate, basketball clinic, history lessons with crafts and music and all the other opportunities to share, teach and learn it has truly been another great month.
