Solidarity with ATU 1505 – Action Alert

Dear members,

The Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1505 is holding an info picket at Winnipeg's City Hall on Tuesday, May 12th at noon.

ATU members have been strong supporters of many CUPE info pickets over the past year, showing up at our pickets at Tuxedo Villa (CUPE 2180) and Community Living Selkirk (CUPE 3085).

Local 3909 fights back against budget cuts

CUPE Local 3909, representing academic support staff at the University of Manitoba, joined with other campus labour and student groups to fight back against cuts imposed by the university’s administration on departments and staff.

The University of Manitoba is already acting on a proposed 4% cut across all departments, with the bulk of the cuts falling on programs and support staff.

WINNIPEG – The union that represents Winnipeg’s municipal workers is looking to the Mayor to protect the city’s front line services and staff.

“Our city relies on our contingent of expert staff,” said Mike Davidson, President of CUPE Local 500. “After many years of vacancy management and a proposed additional increase of $3.4 million over last year, many of our city’s services are being operated with reduced levels of staffing.

WINNIPEG – The union that represents Winnipeg’s municipal workers is looking for the public’s feedback on the state of the city’s snow clearing services through a toll-free hotline and website.

“We know that Winnipeggers have concerns about snow plowing,” said Mike Davidson, President of CUPE Local 500. “We want to collect citizens’ stories on how poor plowing has affected their lives.

Hundreds of students and workers unite to fight cuts at U of M

Campus labour and student groups at the University of Manitoba held a rally on January 27th in opposition to major across-the-board cuts proposed by the university’s administration. The University of Manitoba is proposing 4% cuts across the university, yet have been silent on details.

CUPE Locals 3909, 1482, and 5156 joined a coalition with the University of Manitoba Faculty Association, Association of Employees Supporting Education Services (AESES), Unifor, the Student Action Network, Canadian Federation of Students, University of Manitoba Students’ Union (UMSU) and others in opposition to these cuts, as well as to the ongoing corporatization of campus services and programs.

CUPE applauds Manitoba government’s commitment to children in care

Winnipeg – Today the Government of Manitoba announced an overhaul of the Child and Family Services Emergency Placement Program, committing to hiring 210 highly trained new permanent child-care workers over the next two years.

Tuxedo Villa workers on second day of info pickets, questions arise about state of privately owned long-term care in Manitoba

Something is rotten in the state of Manitoba's long-term care.

Over the past year, hundreds of Manitoba’s long-term care workers have been pushed to take labour action in an attempt to achieve fair wages and safe working conditions.

Maples Personal Care Home (July, 2013), Lions Housing Personal Care Home (August, 2013), Vista Park Lodge (September, 2013), Hillcrest Place (March, 2014), and Tuxedo Villa (July, 2014) have all voted to strike within the past year.

CUPE Manitoba celebrates renewal of Merchant’s Corner

Winnipeg – CUPE Manitoba President Kelly Moist was on-site on Monday along with members of CUPE Local 2348 at the unveiling of new plans to transform the Merchants Hotel on Selkirk Ave in Winnipeg’s North End into a multi-use education, affordable housing, and social services hub.

“Winnipeg’s North End is a place where so many different communities come together in celebration of our city’s diversity” said Moist.
