WCB Local 1063 Workers Sound Alarm on Workload Issues

WCB Local 1063 Workers Sound Alarm on Workload Issues

Late last month, CUPE Local 1063 – representing workers at the Workers’ Compensation Board of Manitoba (WCB), participated in the Canadian Compensation Employees’ Union Conference.

The event occurs every two years and brings together a majority of Union Locals that represent members across Canada that work within their provincial WCB jurisdictions.

The conference is an opportunity for provincial Union locals to discuss current trends within their provinces, and work together to find solutions to the issues and challenges identified. The most recent conference in May focused on issues related to:
– Collective Bargaining trends
– Mobilization & Strike action
– Workload issues
– Union/Employer relationships
– AI Impact to Union workforce
– Grievance trends
– Recruitment & Hiring issues
– Safety trends & Staff claims
– Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Membership Engagement trends

Following completion of the conference, the group put together a press release that was sent out to all Unions to update them on the current challenges, and it is important to note that the number one issue for all provincial representatives was workload and the lack of accountability of their employers to recognize the permanent trends and deal effectively to it.

Workers know this, as they are living it everyday.

Below, CUPE Local 1063 President, Bob Sawchyn provided the link to the press release. The Local continues to work with their employer on the issues, and are hopeful that the recent changes will make a substantial difference in the work life of Local 1063 members in both the short and long term.

CUPE Manitoba will be bringing the issues of workload and employer accountability to the upcoming Presidents’ Leadership Council in October, and in upcoming round table discussions with Affiliated Locals over the coming months.
