WINNIPEG - The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) will join thousands around the world in celebrating the International Day of the Midwife on May 5.
The day will be marked in Manitoba with a rally and picnic on the grounds of the Provincial Legislature in Winnipeg. CUPE Manitoba President Kelly Moist will be speaking at the rally, highlighting the services provided by midwives in across the provinces and around the world.
Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger announced the establishment of “School Support Staff Week” following his remarks at the CUPE Manitoba 50th Anniversary Convention to over 200 CUPE delegates at the Winnipeg Convention Centre.
This week's announcement was an exciting moment for the CUPE Manitoba school division sector who have been calling for a week of recognition for Manitoba's education support staff who work tirelessly every day to help our children succeed.
WINNIPEG – CUPE Manitoba will present a $50,000 cheque to CancerCare Manitoba in support of Camp Indigo, a camp dedicated to providing support to Manitoba children with cancer. The money is the most recent contribution the union’s members are making to pediatric oncology as part of ongoing fundraising for Manitoba children who have cancer.

Winnipeg - Today, as part of the April 28th Day of Mourning events happening across Canada, the Manitoba Government announced its action plan to prevent injury and illness in the workplace.
“CUPE is proud that Manitoba’s NDP government is taking strong legislative action to support workplace health and safety in Manitoba” expresses Kelly Moist, President of CUPE Manitoba, “It is poignant that this announcement comes on a day when the labour movement is remembering our colleagues who died or were injured on the job”.
April 28th marks the National Day of Mourning: a day for us to remember workers who were killed or injured while on the job.
It is a day of reflection and memory for those we've lost, and a day of action to highlight the importance of workplace health and safety.

WINNIPEG – Today the Government of Manitoba introduced a new bill in the Manitoba Legislature, expanding on the rights of persons living with disabilities in the province.
"We are encouraged that the NDP is taking disability rights seriously" stated Kelly Moist, President of CUPE Manitoba, "once enacted, this bill will set a new standard in the province, and will promote more discussion on disability and accessibility issues in Manitoba.
Maintaining quality front line services for Manitobans a priority for CUPE
WINNIPEG – While today’s Manitoba budget announcement did not include significant funding increases to public services, CUPE is pleased that the budget does not include continued wage freezes for public sector workers.
“We appreciate that paying down the deficit is no longer shouldered by CUPE members as we have seen in previous budgets,” said CUPE Manitoba President Kelly Moist, “we are also pleased that we have not seen the types of cuts experienced by other provinces”.
CUPE members and staff in Manitoba marked April 10, Day of Pink by wearing pink T-shirts with the slogan: “It isn’t BIG to make others feel small: an anti-bullying message from the CUPE Manitoba Human Rights Committee”.
