CUPE MB recognizes International Trans Day of Visibility

A letter from Daniel Richards, 2SLGBTQI+ Diversity Representative – CUPE Manitoba

This Friday and every March 31st most of the world observes International Trans Day of Visibility. A day to celebrate trans people and raise awareness about the discrimination still faced by Transgender people worldwide.

In 1948 the United Nations proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to set out fundamental human rights to be universally protected.

CUPE Manitoba leads World Water Day event in Winnipeg

Indigenous water protectors, CUPE leaders Gina McKay, Gord Delbridge, and elected CUPE MB Indigenous Representative Brandon Murdock, Elder Gramma Shingoose, the Southern Thunderbird Medicine Drum group, and speakers including NDP MLA for Winnipeg-St Johns Nahanni Fontaine and activist Sadie Lavoie gathered at the Oodena Celebration Circle at the Forks to mark World Water Day on Wednesday.

CUPE Manitoba marks the U.N. International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

In 1966 the United Nations proclaimed March 21 the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination to honour and remember the victims of the Sharpeville South Africa massacre.

On March 21, 1960, sixty nine peaceful protesters were killed by law enforcement and at least 180 were injured physically. They were peacefully protesting the use of pass laws in South Africa which were very similar to the pass system Canada used to control Indigenous peoples.

CUPE 1063 strike update

Announcement (from CUPE 1063 bargaining update #25)
On Thursday March 16, 2023, CUPE 1063 and the Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba agreed on a tentative new collective agreement pending ratification. Strike action will be suspended.

The agreement will have to be approved by both the CUPE 1063 Executive Committee and the Board of Directors of the WCB.
